Lower limb
Oblique head of adductor hallucis
Musculus adductor hallucis, caput obliquum
- Origin
- Base of metatarsals 2-4, cuboid bone and lateral cuneiform bone
- Insertion
- Lateral sesamoid bone and base of the proximal phalanx of the great toe (together with the transverse head)
- Function
- Adduction and flexion of the MTP joint of the great toe; supports the transverse arch of the foot
- Innervation
- Deep branch of the lateral plantar nerve
- Movement & chain
- Works together with the transverse head of adductor hallucis to stabilize the forefoot and the transverse arch of the foot during push-off.
- Palpation
- Deep in the central plantar midfoot along the bases of metatarsals II–IV; not superficially palpable.
- Clinical
- Maintains the transverse metatarsal arch; lateral pull on the proximal phalanx contributes to progressive hallux valgus deformity.
- Segmental innervation
- S2-S3, via the deep branch of the lateral plantar nerve.
- In clinical practice
- Diabetic foot inspection and pressure ulcer prevention; monitor for friction points from footwear or bedding and ensure correct anti-embolism stocking fit.
- Region in the model
- Lower limb
