Trendelenburg test
- What you examine
- Function of the hip abductors during single leg stance.
- Procedure
- Have the patient stand on one leg and watch the position of the pelvis from behind.
- Positive when
- The pelvis drops on the swing side, or the trunk leans towards the stance side to compensate.
- What the test is worth
- Reasonably specific for abductor weakness; it often takes thirty seconds to become visible.
- Caution
- Pain can produce the same picture without there being any loss of strength.
