McMurray test
- What you examine
- A tear in the medial or the lateral meniscus.
- Procedure
- Supine: flex the knee maximally, then extend it while externally rotating the tibia (medial meniscus) or internally rotating it (lateral meniscus), with a valgus or varus stress respectively.
- Positive when
- A palpable or audible click with pain over the joint line.
- What the test is worth
- High specificity (around 0.77) but low sensitivity: a negative test does not rule out a meniscal tear.
- Caution
- Joint line tenderness is more sensitive than McMurray itself; use them together.
