Arteria carotis communis
- Origo
- Rechts uit de truncus brachiocephalicus; links rechtstreeks uit de arcus aortae
- Insertie
- Stijgt op in de vagina carotica in de hals en splitst ter hoogte van de bovenrand van het cartilago thyroidea (C4) in de a. carotis interna en a. carotis externa
- Functie
- Voornaamste arteriële toevoer naar het hoofd, aangezicht en de grote hersenen
- Innervatie
- Sinus caroticus-tak van de n. glossopharyngeus (IX) en n. vagus (X) voor baroreceptie en chemoreceptie
- Beweging & keten
- Gefixeerd in de diepe halsschede ventraal van de cervicale wervelkolom
- Palpatie
- Zeer krachtig palpabel in de halsdriehoek mediaal van de m. sternocleidomastoideus ter hoogte van het strottenhoofd (carotispuls)
- Klinisch
- Carotisstenose (atherosclerose leidend tot TIA of CVA), carotissinushypersensitiviteit (bradycardie en syncope bij druk op de carotisbifurcatie)
- Segmentale innervatie
- C3–C5 cervicaal niveau

- Standaard pulsatiecontrole tijdens reanimatie (BLS/ALS); carotismassage bij supraventriculaire tachycardie onder strikte indicatie
